PML and KORDI Partner to Co-convene EAS Congress Workshop

 

Quezon City, Philippines — The information from global ocean observation platforms and ocean and ecosystem models provides the scientific basis upon which sound plans and policies can be drawn. The value of ocean platforms and ecosystem models further extends to their ability to forecast events based on the patterns of past environmental changes, thus providing information to stakeholders on the ground on what they will have to deal with and prepare for. It follows that the utilization of such readily available information from various ocean observation platforms enhances the responsiveness and preparedness of communities in dealing with environmental threats and issues. However, while the information generated from these observation platforms is available and potentially useful, the actual benefit in local planning and management has yet to be fully realized.

 

The East Asian Seas Congress 2012 will include a workshop on "Monitoring, Reporting and Forecasting: Applications, Benefits and On-the-Ground Applications." The workshop will present case studies from within and outside the East Asian Seas region concerning how results from science-based tools can aid in planning and decisionmaking for coastal and marine and management at the local level. It will showcase the application of information from global and regional ocean observation platforms and ecosystem models as input for sustainable fisheries and aquaculture; pollution management; resources conservation; and disaster preparedness and risk management, among others. The workshop will further discuss the importance of regular monitoring and reporting systems for sound planning and decision making in coastal and marine management at the local level.

 

Participants from research institutions, academe, national and local governments, UN and other international organizations, NGOs and civil society will share their experiences and expertise during the workshop. This workshop is co-convened by the Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) and Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute (KORDI) under Sub-theme 2 of the Congress, "Accelerating Blue Innovations in Support of an Ocean-based Blue Economy" of the International Conference. The East Asian Seas Congress will be held on 9-13 July 2012 in Changwon City, Republic of Korea.

 

The East Asian Seas Congress 2012 will be hosted by the Republic of Korea, and organized by PEMSEA, the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs (MLTM) of the Republic of Korea, and the City Government of Changwon. The EAS Congress 2012 is supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Carrying the theme, "Building a Blue Economy: Strategy, Opportunities, and Partnerships in the Seas of East Asia," it will bring to the fore the crucial role of coastal and ocean resources in support of the global commitments to enhance human welfare and environmental sustainability while pursuing economic growth. In particular, it will provide participants with the prospect of identifying contributions, progress and achievements in the governance of regional/sub-regional seas within the framework of the Sustainable Development Strategy for the Seas of East Asia (SDS-SEA), which are the essential building blocks for a blue economy, as well as new opportunities and the intergovernmental and multi-sectoral partnerships.
