PEMSEA welcomes new trainees from China, Indonesia, and Lao PDR

MANILA, PHILIPPINES—Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA) is glad to welcome five trainees from China, Indonesia, and Lao PDR to the PEMSEA Resource Facility (PRF) in Manila, Philippines. This is part of PEMSEA’S Traineeship Programme, which supports capacity and knowledge building regarding integrated coastal management (ICM) in the region.

The trainees are:

  1. Adithyar Rachman, from the Tangerang Regional Development Planning Agency, Indonesia

  2. Arry Susilo Wardhani, from the Environmental Agency of Semarang City, Indonesia

  3. Bounleay Nanthavong, from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Sekong Province, Lao PDR

  4. Souksamlane Songkham, from the Department of Water Resources, MONRE, Lao PDR

  5. Xiaotong Zhu, from the China PEMSEA Center

During their period at the PRF, the trainees will learn and look into how the Sustainable Development Strategy for the Seas of East Asia (SDS-SEA) affects their locality and country, and how its implementation assists in achieving aims under the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While learning ICM concept, frameworks, processes, and tools, the trainees will also visit ICM sites in the Philippines, where they will be able to see ICM good practices in action.

These trainees will be at the PRF during a very important period, as we prepare to host the East Asian Seas Congress 2018 in Iloilo City this 27-30 November. This Congress brings together people from throughout the Seas of East Asia region representing governments, civil society, and the private sector.

By bringing in trainees from PEMSEA’s partners throughout the region, the PEMSEA Traineeship Programme not only helps develop their capacity in implementing ICM, but strengthens ties within the region. Building regional partnerships through the PEMSEA Traineeship Programme and through events such as the EAS Congress is an imperative part in tackling the often-transboundary issues affecting our shared seas.
