CMC is an autonomous, non-stock, non-profit, and non-governmental organization registered in the Philippines. Started in 1994 with funding support from the Swedish Agency for Research Cooperation with Developing Countries (SAREC) and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), the Center offers strategic policy, management and technological solutions to specific problems in the development of the coastal and marine areas and at the same time, attempts to strike a balance between economic development and environmental protection, using comprehensive, integrative, and multi-sectoral development planning and management approach.

CMC operates with the cooperation of professionals (scientists, academicians, managers and planners) of diverse expertise and nationalities, and a consortium of public and private research/training institutions in a collaborative network throughout the developing as well as developed countries.

CMC has been active during the past years in participating a number of cooperative and bilateral projects on capacity building and research project development and management as well as organizing and sponsoring training courses, workshops and conferences related to the coastal and marine area development and management.
