PEMSEA Joins Panel on Strategies for Scaling up SDG 14 Implementation

PEMSEA is proud to be part of the preparatory meeting on Feb 15-16 for The Ocean Conference happening at United Nations headquarters in New York City June 5-9, 2017. The preparatory meeting includes a series of side events covering a range of ocean topics.

 

Stephen Adrian Ross, PEMSEA’s Executive Director, will discuss Integrated Coastal Management as a tool to accelerate SDG14 implementation as part of a side event focusing on case studies highlighting the successful implementation of SDG14. Opening speakers include Peter Thomson, President of the UN General Assembly, Helen Clark, Administrator of UNDP, Isabella Lovin, Minister for International Development Cooperation and Climate and Deputy Prime Minister of Sweden, and Hon. Siaosi 'Ofakivahafolau Sovaleni, Deputy Prime Minister of Tonga.

 

Joining Mr. Ross on the technical panel are experts Ivan Zavadsky, Executive Secretary, International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River; Tim Adams, Director of Fisheries Management, Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency; Fredrik Haag, Technical Officer, Marine Environment Division, International Maritime Organization; Captain Francisco Arias, Marine Research Institute of Colombia; Andrew Hudson, Head, Water & Ocean Governance Programme, UNDP; and Laverne Walker, Senior Project Officer, UNDP/GEF Caribbean LME+ Project.

 

The event will cover successful approaches in reversing large scale dead zones, moving global tuna stocks towards sustainability, reducing the impacts of shipping on the marine environment and introducing integrated, ecosystem-based approaches to sustainable coastal and ocean management at both local and multi-country scales.
