Commemorating World Mangrove Day, Tangerang Regency Government Preserves Mangrove Ecosystem

Every year the 26th of July is commemorated as World Mangrove Day. To mark the day, the members of the Tangerang Regency Government Fisheries Service, Tangerang Regency Bappeda, and coastal volunteers were taught to plant mangrove trees at Ketapang Urban Aquaculture, Mauk District, on Saturday, 24 July 2021.

Fisheries Department staff Hari Mahardika said the activity was carried out by the Tangerang Regency Integrated Coastal Management Project Management Office (PMO), together with volunteers from Pesisir Mengajar. "A total of 2,000 mangrove trees were planted in commemoration of World Mangrove Day. There are 4 types of mangrove species planted, namely Rhizopora stilossa, R. apiculata, Bruguiera cylindrica and Avicienna marina."

Hari also explained that Tangerang Regency has become an Integrated Coastal Management (ICM) site in partnership with PEMSEA since 2016. The area of Ketapang Urban Aquaculture is about 14.5 hectares, and contains 14 species of mangroves: Rhizopora stilossa, R. apiculata, R. mucronata, Avicienna marina, A. lanata, A. oficinalis, Bruguiera cylindrica, B. gymnoriza, Sonneratia casiolaris, S. alba, Ceriop tagal, Xylocarpus granatum, Lumnitzera racemosa, and Nypa fruitican. “More than 200 thousand mangroves have been planted with 14 different types of mangroves", Hari noted regarding activities since the area became an ICM site.

He also added that he would plan to carry out regular mangrove planting every 2/3 months, because along the Tangerang coast abrasion is quite high, affecting at least 579 hectares of land. "Alhamdulillah, in 2020 we have mapped it with the Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), our mangrove planting has increased by almost 57 hectares, we also still have homework, because there are still 500 hectares of critical land that has not been rehabilitated," he said. Therefore, it is hoped that all parties will be involved in planting mangroves in the area, especially SKPD colleagues in Tangerang Regency.
