Quezon City, Philippines — PEMSEA welcomes four new interns to the PEMSEA Resource Facility (PRF) as part of PEMSEA's Professional Upgrading Program for 2012. The interns include Mr. Caetano Ximenes, Mr. Rafael Pereira Goncalves and Mr. Sebastiao Soares Pinto of Timor-Leste and Mr. Khanhthong Thammavongsa of Lao PDR.
Mr. Ximenes, Mr. Goncalves, and Mr. Pinto all work for the Timor-Leste Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF) and are involved in the national SDS-SEA and local ICM implementation in the country. While in the Philippines, the three interns will be trained in various sustainable livelihood activities to prepare them in developing similar livelihood programs in Manatuto and Liquica in Timor-Leste.
During their ten-week internship, they will undergo training in developing and managing agriculture-based social enterprises in the local level. These include hands-on training in Iloilo, Philippines on improved techniques in seaweed cultivation, fish processing, shrimp paste production, and fruit-processing. They will also visit the Ilocos Region for trainings in salt production and moringa farming.
Mr. Thamavongsa has been working for Lao PDR's Department of Natural Resources and Environment for the past three years and is part of the project management team for the Sedone Integrated River Basin Management Program. During his internship, he will receive training in ICM program development and Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). Mr. Thamavongsa will also work with PRF staff to review and finalize the Sedone Strategy and prepare for development of an implementation plan for IWRM in Sedone, Lao PDR.
All four interns will also be involved in preparations for the East Asian Seas (EAS) Congress 2012 to be held in Changwon City, RO Korea this July.
PEMSEA's internship program is designed to provide young professionals from the region with an opportunity to work in an international organization to strengthen technical, administrative and management skills, and enhance communication and working relationships between the PRF and PEMSEA's Country and Non-Country Partners.
