Making Asia-Pacific Resilient to Climate Change

At the ongoing COP 26 United Nations Climate Change Conference happening in the UK, countries are pledging their individual commitments on how to address the global climate crisis through carbon credits, funding for countries vulnerable to climate change, nature-based solutions, and practical solutions needed to adapt to climate impacts.

In the Asia-Pacific, a web-based information platform for national and local policymakers, researchers, businesses, and individuals seeking practical, up-to-date information on climate change adaptation and relevant science was established during the G20 Summit held in 2018 in Japan. The Asia-Pacific Climate Change Adaptation Information Platform (AP-PLAT) envisions nurturing countries in the region to build a climate-resilient and sustainable society through science-based climate change adaptation strategies and measures, risk-informed decision making, and pragmatic capacity building.

On November 15, 2021 (8:00 AM – 9:30 AM, GMT+7), a webinar entitled “Making Asia-Pacific Resilient to Climate Change: The effort and perspective of the Asia-Pacific Climate Change Adaptation Information Platform (AP-PLAT),” will be organized by the Ministry of Environment of Japan and other Japan-based institutions such as the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and Center for Climate Change Adaptation (CCCA) of the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES). The session is part of a series of technical workshops in the lead up to the 2021 East Asian Seas (EAS) Congress happening on December 1-2 and organized by the Royal Government of Cambodia and Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA) Resource Facility.

The AP-PLAT webinar will be a venue to: (1) understand the current and future challenges caused by climate change in the Asia-Pacific; (2) introduce useful scientific tools available in the AP-PLAT website and how those tools are used for the development of adaptation measures in the region; (3) introduce some of the latest online capacity development contents available in AP-PLAT, such as encountering compound risks, and understanding ISO standards related to climate change adaptation; and (4) discuss the opportunities for building a partnership between AP-PLAT and PEMSEA as well as the role of IGES as a PEMSEA Regional Center of Excellence (RCoE) in Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction and promoter of capacity building activities about AP-PLAT.

Expected outcomes and outputs from the event include:

  • Improved awareness and knowledge on current and future climate change impacts in the Asia-Pacific;

  • Wide recognition and application of the scientific tools available on AP-PLAT for developing adaptation measures in the Asia-Pacific; and

  • Identified potential areas for collaboration between PEMSEA, AP-PLAT, and IGES.

    The virtual event is open to the public and will be useful for researchers and consultants, officers of international organizations, national and local policy-makers, NGO staff, students and other interested individuals.
