Manila, Philippines — Dr. Kim Hak-So, President of the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI), visited the PEMSEA Resource Facility (PRF) to strengthen mutual collaborative activities between KMI and PEMSEA. The event also marked the signing of Letters of Agreement (LOAs) for supporting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Strategy for the Seas of East Asia (SDS-SEA) in several countries of the region. The visit marked the first overseas trip of the KMI President since he assumed office in July 2010.
The LOA signing ceremony between KMI and PEMSEA was held in the PEMSEA Office on 16 August 2010. It laid down specific work programmes in Least Developed Countries (LDCs), which include: (1) strengthening local government implementation of the Coastal Use Zoning Scheme in Sihanoukville, Cambodia; (2) National Water Policy development in Lao PDR; (3) National ICM Policy development in Timor-Leste; and (4) the organization of the 6th Regional Twinning Workshop on Integrated River Basin and Coastal Area Management. The LOAs were signed by Dr. Kim, President of KMI and Prof. Raphael P.M. Lotilla, PEMSEA Executive Director.During the ceremony, KMI and PEMSEA pledged to further strengthen their partnership through careful planning, execution, and thorough monitoring of collaborative activities, as well as the possible secondment of KMI staff for capacity enhancement. The KMI President also requested the PRF's support to KMI's International Marine Environment Policy Education Programme (IMEPEP) which is offered annually by the KMI Ocean Academy (KOA).KMI and the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs (MLTM) have continuously been supporting the implementation of the SDS-SEA in LDCs since 2008.
