World Water Week

The World Water Week in Stockholm, from 17-22 August, has a special focus on sanitation in 2008. The Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) will help to paint Stockholm town from blue to brown through its cutting-edge sessions.

For a Clean and Healthy World - The Role of Sanitation for the MDGs

WSSCC Executive Director Jon Lane moderates this high-level plenary panel on the World Water Week opening day. In it, prominent UN, civil society and political leaders will examine how improvements in sanitation enhance MDG efforts on poverty, hunger, child mortality, gender equality, primary education, maternal health, major diseases and environmental sustainability.

The Best of Sanitation: Synthesis and Outcomes of the Regional Sanitation Conferences

This World Water Week flagship sanitation event presents the political and technical highlights from four regional meetings held as part of the International Year of Sanitation. What happened at AfricaSan, EASAN, LATINOSAN and SACONSA, and what do they mean for the future? Convenors with WSSCC include UN-WATER, UNICEF, WHO and WSP.

Introduction to the Global Sanitation Fund

This "nuts and bolts" side event will present the unique, multi-donor Global Sanitation Fund. The GSF is designed to increase financing in the sector and to support national efforts to help poor people attain sustainable access to basic sanitation.

Water and Sanitation Advocacy: How Can We Convince You?

This seminar, co-hosted with WaterAid, will bring together campaigners who will talk about the successes attained and the challenges faced in trying to change behaviors around sanitation. Also participating in the seminar: the audiences that were targeted at the household, community and government levels.

The Lingering Failure of Sanitation - Why?

Billions of dollars have been spent, major conferences held, and international years, decades and goals declared. Yet, the number of people lacking access to improved sanitation has increased. This workshop will examine the strengths and weaknesses in existing sanitation approaches to see how sanitation planning, decision-making, implementation, management and operation can be improved. WSSCC is a convenor along with SIWI, GTZ, and SuSanA.

WASH Media Awards

First-class journalism on water, sanitation and hygiene issues will be honored with the WASH Media Award for 2008, sponsored by WSSCC and SIWI. The best of the best will be on display during the WASH Media Award Ceremony.
