International Year of the Reef 2008 by PEMSEA Webmaster — last modified July 28, 2008 12:24 PM
Ten years ago, 1997 was declared the International Year of the Reef (IYOR). The first IYOR campaign was initiated in response to the increasing threats and loss of coral reefs and associated ecosystems, like mangroves and sea grasses. IYOR 97 was a global effort to increase awareness and understanding of coral reefs, and support conservation, research and management efforts.

The Water Environment Partnership in Asia (WEPA) will hold the 3rd International Forum in 23-24 October 2008 in Malaysia. This forum aims to contribute to the promotion of better water environmental governance by accumulating knowledge and experiences on good water environmental management as well as by developing a network among various stakeholders in the region.

Biodiversity loss can lead to human extinction. Unfortunately, this threat has not attracted enough leadership, public and media attention to generate a concerted effort to halt the rate of biodiversity loss. This lack of awareness is attributed to the dearth of information campaigns and materials on the values of biodiversity. To help fill this gap, the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB), the ASEAN Foundation (AF), the ASEAN Secretariat (ASEC), the European Union (EU), the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD), and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) launched the ASEAN Champions of Biodiversity.
